2013 Street Project Update – Richardson Street:
As has been reported in the past, Maggiora & Ghilotti, Inc. had expected to begin demolition on Richardson Street on September 3. It has now been postponed to allow PG&E to lower/relocate gas mains on the street. PG&E must complete this work before the City can allow Maggiora & Ghilotti to begin their work on demolition and reconstruction. PG&E expects to be finished with their work by the end of September.
Stay tuned for any further changes in this project.

Alex’s titles for Lonely Planet include Italy, Tuscany & Umbria, The Caribbean Islands, and most recently, Calm (2013) and Happy (2012).
Join Us for our Annual Special Olympics Fundraising Event – this year it’s dual Tip-A-Cops
Tip-A-Cop is an annual fundraising event organized by the Law Enforcement Torch Run in which officers from different agencies volunteer their time and act as “Celebrity Waiters" to raise funds for Special Olympics. We serve patrons, while in uniform, and give each table an envelope asking for, in addition to the tips for their server, a donation to Special Olympics.
Please join us at Piazza D’Angelo Ristorante and Balboa Café, 22 and 38 Miller Avenue, Mill Valley on Friday, September 13 from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
In 2012, over $100,000 was raised for Special Olympics in Northern California through Tip-A-Cops at various restaurants.

The City of Sausalito is seeking firms interested in submitting proposals for an Analysis and Evaluation of the Marinship Specific Plan. Proposals are due by September 23, 2013, and proposers must attend a pre-proposal conference on September 9, 2013. Dumpsters at Cypress Ridge
Please note that the City has placed two green waste dumpsters temporarily at Cypress Ridge. As part of its coordination for the Art Festival Weekend, these dumpsters have been placed there to assist in the hauling of waste of the festival premises. These have not been placed there permanently and will be removed shortly after the holiday weekend.

Assemblymember Levine to hold Mobile Office Hours
You are invited to Assemblymember Levine’s Southern Marin District Office Hours on Saturday, September 7th from 10am – 12pm. The District Office Hours will be at the Mill Valley Community Center at 180 Camino Alto, Mill Valley, CA 94941. Assemblyman Levine is holding these events at different locations throughout the district; however, this is his first in Southern Marin.
As you know, many residents throughout the district have very busy schedules and may have a difficulty in reaching the Assemblyman during regular business hours. It is his hope that these mobile office hours provide citizens the opportunity to ask him questions and share their concerns or suggestions about state government.

Business Advisory Commission Vacancies
The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) is currently seeking to fill two vacant positions on the BAC. The BAC, which meets monthly, is charged with the responsibility for periodically evaluating the economy of the City and identifying actions to promote the economic health of the business community, as well as other duties as requested by the City Council or as considered advisable by the Committee and approved by the City Council.
For the first vacant position, interested candidates must be local business people and/or commercial landlords. The position will be appointed by the BAC. To apply for consideration for the BAC-appointed position please contact Lilly Schinsing, Administrative Analyst, at LSchinsing@ci.sausalito.ca.us. Applications will be due by September 17.

The Sausalito Historical Society Launches “Sausalito Sets Sail”
The Sausalito Historical Society is launching a self-guided walking tour along the Sausalito waterfront, which will include 6 interpretive graphic panels placed temporarily along the route. The installation will coincide with the heightened interest in sailing on San Francisco Bay with the 34th America’s Cup races.
The walking tour begins at the Ice House Visitors Center and Historic exhibit at 780 Bridgeway, where the Sausalito Historical Society will host a launch party at 6 PM, Tuesday evening, September 4. There will be a banner and two introductory panels at the Ice House, and six additional themed waterfront panels on the walking tour placed from Gabrielson Park south along Bridgeway.
At the same time the Historical Society will open an exhibit of sailing related art and artifacts from its own archives and members’ collections in the Society’s Exhibit Room on the top floor of City Hall at 420 Litho Street (just a few blocks north of the Ice House).
The walking tour was designed by The Sibbett Group exhibition designers, Jessica Brainard & Associates interpretive planners, Leslie Stone Associates graphic designers and Renée Harcourt Design graphic designers —all firms based in Sausalito and volunteering their services. It has been approved by the Bay Conservation and Development Commission and the City Council and endorsed by the Parks and Recreation Department, the Hospitality and Business Committee and the Chamber of Commerce.
It is partially funded by donations from Society members and the Sausalito Art Festival Foundation. Casa Madrona Hotel & Spa has agreed to be a major sponsor, and other sponsors include Inn Above Tide, Scoma’s, Bert Damner and The Ship’s Store. The Society is seeking additional sponsorships, as well.

Save the Date – October 26, 2013
The Sausalito Woman's Club is joining forces with the SMFD and Marin Emergency Medical Services to sponsor a City-wide "Hands-Free CPR" demonstration and opportunity to learn the method. It's from 11 AM-1 PM on Saturday, Oct. 26. It will be held at the Sausalito Fire Dept and is free of charge.
We'd appreciate your putting it on the City calendar so we can attract as many people as possible to take advantage of this chance to learn this important procedure.
|TIP OF THE MONTH FROM YOUR BOARDS/COMMITTEES AND STAFF
Do you have California native oak trees on your property? Here are a few tips for keeping them healthy:
• Avoid frequent irrigation during the dry season (June-October)
• Do not disturb the soil in the root zone (the area beneath the tree’s canopy).
• Make sure water drains away from the tree.
• Avoid compacting soil or laying pavement beneath the tree.
• Prune only during the dry season, and don’t remove more than 20% of the foliage during any one year.

Disaster Preparedness Committee:
Temporary communications disruptions in cities are more common than you might think. They may result from power outages, fires, or other frequently encountered urban technological problems. But when a major disaster strikes, the damaged communication lines may require days to be repaired and regular service restored. During emergencies your cellular phone service may also be disrupted.
Prepare yourself and your family for a communications breakdown by discussing the possibility in advance and make a plan of action in case you are separated when the communications breakdown occurs. Make sure that your family has access to all the emergency phone numbers that your family has deemed necessary in your disaster plan.
The only way to effectively communicate over long distance during communication system failures is by two-way radio transmitters. The best types to own for emergency use are walkie-talkies, as they are easy to use and portable. There are many different types available today/. The most practical ones for citizens are:
General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) Radios- These have an operating range from five (5) to twenty-five (25) miles. The GMRS service was created by the Federal Communications Commission to provide families with a reliable form of short distance communications that can be used during outings. The operate GRMS units; you need to file for an FCC license.
Family Radio Service (FRS) Radios- FRS band radios have become quite popular over the past few years. They are an inexpensive way to keep in touch with family members or friends over short distances. The range for the FRS radios are approximately four (4) city blocks or one (1) to three (3) miles in an open rural area. They are especially useful during emergencies when you need to keep in touch around large crowds and confusion. You don’t need a license for FRS radios, but the FCC does have a strict set of rules regarding their use. An example of the FCC rules is that no profanities are to be used on the radio and strict prohibitions regarding modifying your radio or monitoring other peoples transmissions.
Hand-held Units- Hand-held radios are able to communicate over long distances. The radio-to-radio range of a small five watt output hand-held radio can vary depending on sun spot activity and your location. Hand-held ham units can also bounce signals off radio signal regenerators called “repeaters” that can significantly extend their operational range. To own and operate a ham radio, you must first get a basic FCC “no code” technician class license. “No-code” means that you will not have to learn Morse code to use the system. You will also need to take a relatively simple thirty-five (35) question multiple choice test. If you pass the test, your class of license will allow you to access different ham frequencies above 30 megahertz (MHz).
High quality GMRS and FRS radios range in price from $50-$150 per pair and are made by several vendors. Extra performance comes with a price. Hand held radios are costlier than GMRS and FRS counterparts. If you want an extra edge in an emergency and are willing to learn how to use them properly they are worth the extra money.
Radio Scanners- Another valuable and relatively affordable communications tool is a radio scanner. Once programmed by the user, this device will automatically scan over and lock onto different radio frequencies used by fire, police, and in some cases even the military. Having the ability to listen in on these organizations transmissions can provide you with important information that may help you during a crisis or disaster. Many different vendors make scanners; you will need to research what scanner will work best for you. Once you obtain a scanner you will need to obtain and read some reference material to teach you the ins and outs about the proper use of scanners and different active frequencies.
