Bridgeway Closures
The Public Works Department wishes to advise you that the Sausalito-Marin City Sanitary District will be performing sewer line cleaning activities along Bridgeway, between Harbor Drive and Coloma Street, starting October 1st and ending October 4th. The right hand lane in the northbound direction in this area of Bridgeway will be closed during working hours to support this work. Please expect traffic delays.

2013 Street Project Update – Richardson Street:
In preparation for the repaving of Richardson Street, Pacific Gas and Electric Company and it's contractors will be working in the area starting September 30 to replace a section of its natural gas distribution pipeline. Construction will take place along Richardson Street between West Street to Third Street with some minor traffic delays throughout the week. Work will occur between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. PG&E is expected to complete the project by Friday, October 4 at which time the city will move forward with its repaving project.


Some customers may anticipate limited interruptions to gas services. All customers experiencing interruptions will receive direct communication from PG&E or it's contractor, ARB. Construction schedules are subject to changes due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. We appreciate the community's patience as we complete this important work. Parking Lot #1 Booth Temporarily Out of Service
While construction continues in the downtown area, Commuter Parking SmartCard and Resident Parking SmartCard transactions will be handled at the Sausalito Police Department. The Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project necessitates the removal of the parking booth to allow for the renovation of the adjacent sewer pump station.

All Resident and Commuter card services are available Monday through Friday according to the following schedule. This schedule is subject to change, additional hours may be added if required:

Monday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Tuesday 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM
Wednesday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Thursday 9:00 AM – 1:30 AM
Friday 1:30 PM – 8:00 PM

4th Annual Disaster Preparedness Awareness Event
On Saturday, October 19th the Disaster Preparedness Committee will be holding their 4th annual Disaster Preparedness Awareness Event in conjunction with the City’s Yard Sale at the MLK property. Mark your calendars accordingly and watch for more information as we get closer to this most informative event.


Southern Marin Fire Protectin District Open House is set for Sunday, October 6 from 12:00 to 3:00 pm
Come and meet the Southern Marin Fire Department, get a station tour and view the equipment. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer your questions and show you around. Educational and informational materials will be available at all stations.

For the adventurous types, pick up a fire house passport, visit all three fire stations, check out our web page and you could enter to win a movie night at the fire hour for 10 kids with popcorn.

35th Annual Chili Cook-Off – Saturday, September 28
Come join us on Saturday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm for the great Chili Cook-Off event. Watch as the chefs prepare their wares and get ready to share it with those who dare to try. A $10 tasking band allows you the opportunity to taste it all. Help judge who has the best in town.

Pursuant to City Council direction at the September 10th City Council meeting, the Legislative Committee and the Planning Commission Subcommittee will hold a meeting on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 6pm to discuss the Updated Standards for Two and Multi-Family Zoning Districts.

The meeting will be held beginning at 6pm on Monday, September 30, 2013 in the City Hall conference room (next door to the Council Chambers).

I’ve attached the agenda for the meeting, a handout for discussion purposes during the meeting and the draft ordinance that went to the Council on 9/10/13.

You are welcome to attend the meeting! If you are planning on attending and are able to send me a quick reply email letting me know that you are planning on attending it would be appreciated—if we have large community interest we can move the meeting location over to the Council Chambers.

Housing Element Update and Study of the Marinship

The City of Sausalito will be initiating work on the updating the Housing Element and a study of the Marinship area. Notice of Community Informational Meetings FEMA’s S.F. Bay Coastal Study
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), cities and towns, and the County of Marin, will be hosting informational meetings on the FEMA San Francisco Bay Coastal Study at the dates and times shown above. The same information will be presented by FEMA at each meeting. You have received this notice from the City of Sausalito because you are currently within a Special Flood Hazard Area and/or your parcel may be affected by this study.

The FEMA coastal study to re-examine flood risk along the San Francisco Bay shoreline is scheduled to be completed shortly. This study will result in revised Flood Insurance Risk Maps, which may include a change in flood risk classification for some property owners or add properties to a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA). Following additional public notice, the final revised maps based on the study will be issued for formal review and comment in January 2014.

What will happen at the meeting?
FEMA will summarize the study and revised Flood Insurance Risk Maps. A schedule of activities and milestones will be reviewed. A flood insurance representative will discuss the changes to the National Flood Insurance Program. Draft maps will be available for viewing showing the proposed new limit of SFHA. There will be a question and answer period for general questions followed by a break out session where local officials can answer more specific questions.

Sausalito Village – Monthly Meeting – Wednesday, October 9 at 12 noon

Sausalito Village will feature a talk by Mary Kae Krause at its monthly meeting at the Edgewater Room, Sausalito City Hall, 420 Litho Street, Sausalito, on Wednesday, October 9 at noon. Ms. Krause will review the A, B, C’s and D’s of Medicare; which each one covers, how to obtain these benefits, and what costs are involved. She will also review Medicare changes resulting from the Affordable Care Act. Participants are advised to bring a brown bag lunch. This program is open to the community and free of charge.

Mary Kae, Sausalito Village member, is a retired RN with over fifteen years experience working with a managed healthcare insurance company. Most recently, she has been involved in doing telephonic case management with members enrolled in that insurance policy care.

Volunteers Needed to Help with the Age-Friendly Sausalito Questionnaire
We are looking for volunteers who can give 2 or more hours during October, November or December.

Between 2000 and 2010, the population in Sausalito over the age of 55 DOUBLED! The City’s Age-Friendly Sausalito Task Force has been created to address this issue by developing a strategic plan for making Sausalito an Age-Friendly City. The Task Force is following the World Health Organization[WHO]’s Guide to becoming an Age-Friendly City - one that is accessible and inclusive of ALL of its residents.

Our first step will be to assess Sausalito’s current level of age-friendliness. We will do this by asking residents over the age of 55 to complete a short written questionnaire. With the help of volunteers, we want to reach as many residents over the age of 55 as possible between the months of October and December and encourage them to complete the questionnaire. We need YOUR HELP to do it.

As a volunteer, you will help spread the word to neighbors and friends about the importance of completing the questionnaire, assist in distribution of questionnaires and collection of the completed questionnaires, post fliers, address envelopes, assist at events, and more. Save the Date – October 26, 2013
The Sausalito Woman's Club is joining forces with the SMFD and Marin Emergency Medical Services to sponsor a City-wide "Hands-Free CPR" demonstration and opportunity to learn the method. It's from 11 AM-1 PM on Saturday, Oct. 26. It will be held at the Sausalito Fire Dept and is free of charge.

We'd appreciate your putting it on the City calendar so we can attract as many people as possible to take advantage of this chance to learn this important procedure.

“Sausalito Sets Sail”
The Sausalito Historical Society is launched a self-guided walking tour along the Sausalito waterfront, which includes 6 interpretive graphic panels placed temporarily along the route. The walking tour begins at the Ice House Visitors Center and Historic exhibit at 780 Bridgeway. There are six additional themed waterfront panels on the walking tour placed from Gabrielson Park south along Bridgeway.
At the same time the Historical Society will open an exhibit of sailing related art and artifacts from its own archives and members’ collections in the Society’s Exhibit Room on the top floor of City Hall at 420 Litho Street (just a few blocks north of the Ice House).

Tree & Shrub Pruning Tips

  • For most deciduous trees, the best time for major pruning is late winter to early spring because wounds close faster.
  • If you want to prune in fall, wait until trees drop their leaves and are dormant—usually October or November. After leaf drop, you can see the tree’s structure and identify disease and insect problems more easily.
  • Dormancy (especially late winter to early spring) is also a good time to prune evergreens because vigorous spring growth will hide pruning wounds.
  • One exception to the no- early fall-pruning advice is that you should remove dead, diseased, and damaged wood as soon as possible -- for tree health and your safety.

Guidelines for the Management of Food Supplies

During emergencies or disasters the key aspects for managing your food supplies are:
• Safety and Sanitation
• Cooking
• Managing Without Power

Safety and Sanitation

• Keep food in covered containers.
• Keep cooking and eating utensils clean.
• Keep garbage in closed containers and dispose outside, burying garbage if necessary.
• Keep your hands clean by washing them frequently with soap and water that has been boiled or disinfected.
• Use only pre-prepared canned baby formula for infants.
• Discard any food that has come into contact with contaminated floodwater.
• Discard any food that has been at room temperature for two hours or more.
• Discard any food that has an unusual odor, color, or texture.


• Eat foods from cans that are swollen, dented, or corroded, even though the product may look safe to eat.
• Eat any food that looks or smells abnormal, even if the can looks normal.
• Use powdered formulas with treated water.
• Let garbage accumulate inside, both for fire and sanitation reasons.

Note: Thawed food usually can be eaten if it is still “refrigerator cold.” It can be re-frozen if it still contains ice crystals. To be safe, remember, “When in doubt, throw it out.”


• Alternative cooking sources in times of emergency include candle warmers, chafing dishes, fondue pots, or a fireplace.
• Charcoal grills and camp stoves are for outdoor use only.
• Commercially canned food may be eaten out of the can without warming.
• To heat food in a can:
1. Remove the label
2. Thoroughly wash and disinfect the can. (Use a diluted solution of one part bleach to ten parts water.)
3. Open the can before heating.

Managing Without Power
Here are two options for keeping food safe if you are without power for a long period:

• Look for alternate storage space for your perishable food.?
• Use dry ice. Twenty-five pounds of dry ice will keep a 10-cubic-foot freezer below freezing for 3-4 days. Use care when handling dry ice, and wear dry, heavy gloves to avoid injury.
