Thanks to the generous donation of an art hanging system by the Friends of the Library, the Sausalito Public Library is now able to offer regular exhibits of work by local artists on the Library's walls.

If you are interested in exhibiting your artwork at the Library, please review the Library's Art Exhibition Policy and fill out an Art Exhibit Application (see PDF version here). Please note that exhibit space is reserved for artists who either reside in Sausalito or rent or own studio space within Sausalito. Questions may be directed to Abbot Chambers at

Jean Varda
June 7 to July 16, 2015

Jean Varda (1863-1971) lived and maintained a studio on the old ferryboat Vallejo, moored off Gate Five Road, from about 1948 until shortly before his death in Mexico in 1971.  He shared the ferryboat first with fellow artist Gordon Onslow Ford, then later with the writer and Zen Buddhist popularizer Alan Watts.  Varda never dated his works and rarely gave them names.  However, our best guess, based on their style, is that the works on exhibit were completed at some point in the 1950s.
